Dreamgirls Buffalo | Shea’s Performing Arts Centre
It’s the entertaining story of ambition, competition, fortune and failure that made this 1981 Broadway musical a hit during its debut which was also turned into cinema gold with its successful with its star-studded 2006 film adaptation. And now, the Broadway revival of “Dreamgirls” is currently making itsrounds on a national scale, bringing the glitz and glamour of the musical from coast to coast.
The tour will run till early next year, right after New Year’s with their last tour production in Detroit. But before they perform by the border during the holidays, they will be gracing the stage of the Shea’s Performing Arts Center in Buffalo first for a limited run from December 14 to 19, 2010 with two shows lined up on the 18th and the 19th.
Based from the book written by Tom Eyen, “Dreamgirls” the musical spawned the songs “And I am Telling You, I’m not Going” which was an “Effie White” solo and “One Night Only”. The musicalfeatures the talents of Syesha Mercado as “Deena Jones”, Chester Gregory as “James ‘Thunder’ Early”, Chaz Lamar Shepherd as “Curtis Taylor Jr.”, and Moya Angela as the show-stopping and powerfullyvoiced “Effie White”.
Critics were all praises for this Broadway revival. The Chicago Tribune calls the musical “a restless, edgy and frequently thrilling fusion of projections, movement and vocal pyrotechnics” that made the musical transcend 28 years of changing tastes along with the emergence of the “’American Idol’ generation”. While Variety commends Angela for having a “huge laser voice that pierces your body before you know what’s pinned you to your seat” and Gregory who transformed “squealing into an art form, and his rubber legs are the perfect embodiment of that voice”.
